Kristi ord till Petrus

Beviset för att Kristus själv inrättade Påveämbetet genom att utse Petrus som Kyrkans överhuvud består i det löfte i Matteusevangeliet 16:17-19 som fullbordas i Johannesevangeliet 21:15-17. Catholic Encyclopedia - se länk denna sida - förklarar i kommentaren till Matteus-texten att det var först på 1500-talet som felaktiga tolkningar började spridas i stor skala:

"The meaning of this passage does not seem to have been challenged by any writer until the rise of the sixteenth-century heresies. Since then a great variety of interpretations have been put forward by Protestant controversialists. These agree in little save in the rejection of the plain sense of Christ's words. Some Anglican controversy tends to the view that the reward promised to St. Peter consisted in the prominent part taken by him in the initial activities of the Church, but that he was never more than primus inter pares among the Apostles. It is manifest that this is quite insufficient as an explanation of the terms of Christ's promise" (sökord "The Pope")

Guds ord är följande:

"Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-Jona: because flesh and blood hath not revealed it to thee, but my Father who is in heaven. And I say to thee: That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church. And the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give to thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatsoever thou shalt bind upon earth, it shall be bound also in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth, it shall be loosed also in heaven."

Tempus ändras efter Uppståndelsen till direkt presens - här och nu - då Petrus får uppdraget att vara "Den gode herden". Jesu tilltal är medveten didaktik, enkelt men oerhört djuplodande:

"When therefore they had dined, Jesus said to Simon Peter: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me more than these? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. He saith to him again: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? He saith to him: Yea, Lord, thou knowest that I love thee. He saith to him: Feed my lambs. He said to him the third time: Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he had said to him the third time: Lovest thou me? And he said to him: Lord, thou knowest all things: thou knowest that I love thee. He said to him: Feed my sheep."

Underbara och avgörande ord, till upprättelse för den apostel som tidigare tre gånger förnekat sin Herre, varigenom Petrus Klippan blir ämbetsbäraren framför andra: Påven. Som "Den gode herden" är han utsedd att vara Kristi ställföreträdare, det är inget eget val som styrt.

Att avsikten var att inrätta just Petrus-ämbetet, till skillnad från en enbart personlig tjänst, har Kyrkan alltid förstått och bejakat enligt Jesu intention. Om erfarenheten visar att det faktiskt är möjligt att lita till Kyrkans läroämbete, varför missförstås egentligen detta?
